Save Trees, Protect the Environment: Use Sugar Cane Papers from SugarMade

One of the first companies that produces 100% tree free and bio-degradable products, SugarMade has become a brand name for environmental friendly paper products made of sugar cane bagasse and bamboos.  The future is bright, as the products are not only eco-friendly but fairly cost effective compared to papers made of regular materials.  Please contact us and let us know your thoughts.

March 30, 2010

On March 29, 2010, a company called Simple Earth contacted us and requested us to translate their GB/T19001-2000 idt ISO9001:2000 certificate from Chinese into English.  A Chinese Translation Company with a curious mind and a goal to protect the environment, we immediately became interested.  We inquired about the company's environmental friendly products and we would like to share with you what we have learned.

Currently, about 90% of all the paper we use are made from trees.  One way to save trees and to protect the environment is to use tree free and bio-degradable paper products.  Simple Earth, with the brand name SugarMade, is a company that provides such products.  Its paper products are made of 75% sugar cane bagasse, a byproduct of sugar and ethanol production that is in abundant supply, and 25% bamboo, the fastest growing woody plant in the world that the company receives supplies from China's construction wastes and sustainable suppliers.

Sugar Cane Bagasse

For each 10 tons of sugarcane crushed, a sugar factory produces nearly 3 tons of wet sugar cane bagasse. Since bagasse is a byproduct of the cane sugar industry, the quantity of production in each country is in line with the quantity of sugarcane produced.

Bagasse can also be used to make insulated disposable food containers, replacing materials such as styrofoam, which are increasingly regarded as environmentally unacceptable. Insulated disposable food containers made of bagasse are commercially available and can be requested from Simple Earth.

Bamboos

Bamboos are the fastest growing woody plants in the world. They are capable of growing up to 60 centimeters (24 in.) or more per day due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. According to Simple Earth, the company secures 40% of the bamboos from construction waste debris from China, and the remaining 60% from bamboos plants that are harvested by cutting 1/3 from the top of the bamboo plants.

Cost Effectiveness of Sugar Cane Paper Products

For sugar cane paper products, they are competitively priced with the recycled Post Consumer Waste (PCW) papers.

The Future Success of Sugar Cane Paper Products

Sugar cane paper products will have a successful future if companies are able to increase their economies of scale and are able to further lower down the production costs.  In fact, moving the production facilities to China or Southeast Asia while securing the sugar cane bagasse there in large quantities might be a solution.

Manufacturing insulated disposable food containers is another direction.  Millions of migrant workers in China buy lunch boxes each day.  Currently, almost all of them are made of styrofoam, causing a great environmental concern in China.  The leaders of the Chinese government are becoming more conscious about the environment with many sandstorms coming to Beijing this year.  They will give incentives to companies that can provide them with eco-friendly alternative solutions.  Companies with such technologies might want to give it a try.
