To Asians, Americans eat too much junk food.  To Americans, the Chinese and the Japanese work too hard and do not know how to enjoy life.  The solution for all of them? Eat Sunkist fruits for the health benefits and better diets and enjoy life using their natural spa treatment recipes involving lemons and oranges.

Sunkist is one of the largest growers of citrus fruits in the United States.  The company has been promoting its fruits both in the United States and abroad.  In an occasion working as the Mandarin interpreter for visitors from China, I had the privilege of knowing more about the company and experiencing the benefits of citrus fruits.

Health Benefits of Lemon and Grapefruit

Lemons and grapefruits can provide people with many health benefits.  For lemon, aside from vitamin C, its flavonoids have anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory,
and anti-bacterial benefits. Hesperidin, a substance found in citrus fruit, reduces inflammation in arteries. Beta-crypotoxanthin, a phytonutrient, has antioxidant properties that may help to maintain lung health. And limonene, a compound found in lemon peel, was shown in preliminary laboratory studies to be able to kill cancer cells when added in them.

For grapefruits, the most important health benefit to many Americans would be weight loss. Overweight and obese people who are insulin resistant may do better on a weight loss diet if they consume fresh grapefruit and grapefruit juice with each meal. According to a 2006 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, grapefruit consumption reduces insulin resistance and reduces the amount of insulin released into the blood stream after meals, which helps control hunger.

Aside from their weight loss effect, drinking three six ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduces the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke, according to the American Chemical Society.  In a lab study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, Naringenin, a flavonoid concentrated in grapefruit, helps repair damaged DNA in human prostate cancer cells.  Thus, enjoying grapefruit regularly may be one way to promote prostate health by promoting the repair of damaged DNA in prostate cells, thus preventing them from becoming cancerous. Grapefruit pulp also contains glucarates, which are compounds believed to potentially ward off hormone dependent cancers like breast cancer. Studies have shown that when calcium glucarate is absorbed in the intestine, it’s converted into a molecule that inhibits cancer-causing carcinogens from being released into the bloodstream. This in turn increases the amount of carcinogens that can be flushed from the body.  For those concerned with their cholesterol levels, daily grapefruit consumption may reduce cholesterol levels in people with high total and LDL cholesterol. Both white and red grapefruit contain numerous substances that contribute to grapefruit’s ability to lower levels of total and LDL “bad” cholesterol. Additionally, red grapefruit goes a step further to lower triglyceride levels, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The health benefits of grapefruits do not stop here. Drinking grapefruit juice can reduce the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones. According to the British Journal of Nutrition, women who drank a half to one liter of grapefruit juice daily (about 2 to 4 cups per day) increased their urinary pH value and citric acid excretion, thereby significantly decreasing their risk of forming calcium oxalate stones. Grapefruit, shown to lessen the symptoms of osteoarthritis, also contains salicylic acid, which helps to dissolve inorganic calcium found in the body, which builds up in the joints in the body and can lead to the severe joint discomfort associated with osteoarthritis.

Beauty Tips and Natural Spa Treatment Recipes

To many of the busy Chinese and Japanese working class, enjoying life is a luxury.  Using natural ingredients for spa treatments is almost unheard of.  Sunkist, hoping to relieve some of the pressures from their Chinese and Japanese visitors, provided them with recipes for such natural spa treatments.  For example, there is the Banana & Lemon Foot Massage Treatment.  Using
½ Sunkist® lemon, 2 bananas, 2 tablespoons of fine sea salt, and 2 teaspoons of grapeseed oil, you can slice bananas into a bowl and mash. Then, add the juice of the lemon and the rest of the ingredients and mix together. Afterward, massage the mixture into your feet and leave for 10 minutes. Last, rinse off with warm water, dry thoroughly and apply lots of moisturizer.

Sunkist's Future in Asia

For the last a few decades, Sunkist has been promoting itself in Asia.  How is the future of the fruit market in Asia? I personally believe that it will probably one of the fastest growing markets, especially for China.  Recent droughts and water shortages, the reduction of arable land, the widely use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in China have caused a rise in prices and lack of confidence for local fruits in China.  Some of the middle class and wealthy people in China have already begun buying fruits imported from America, both in supermarkets and on the Internet, and many of them prefer buying Sunkist fruits.  This trend will continue as the prices of local produce and the demand for a healthy living increase in the future in China.  For a company that promotes a better diet and a healthy living, we really wish Sunkist well.
