Norman Rockwell, Saturday Evening Post Illustrations and the Future of Stock Photography

Norman Rockwell, a noted painter and illustrator in the United States, produced many works with a broad popular appeal.  His illustrations were popular, until the age of digital images and stock photos.  Currently, although stock photos occupy the majority of magazine covers, the prices of the stock photos have been in decline as a result of increased supply of high quality photos by amateur photographers. What's the future? Companies such as Getty Images will probably have a harder time competing with smaller, but widely popular stock photography sites such as dreamstime.com . There is also the trend with an improved quality of stock photos and a reduction in price. It is a future that Normam Rockwell would not have been imagined.

Today marks the birthday of Norman Percevel Rockwell, a famous American painter and illustrator, whose works enjoyed a broad popular appeal. His illustrations were placed on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post magazine, as well as other magazines.  However, gradually, with the rise of digital images, many magazines started to place stock photos on their covers.  Stock photographers thus have enjoyed a golden period since 1980's.  Yet, recently, the prices of stock photos started a free fall to as low as $30/photo for a major magazine in the United States.  This trend might have created a problem for Getty Images, a company that sues people who infringe on their copyrights, but an golden opportunity for dreamstime.com, a company that provides high quality, low cost stock photos.  It is an inevitable trend, a trend that Normal Rockwell might have never thought of.

Many website owners, who inadvertently used "royalty free" photos from Getty Images without paying for them might have received a letter demanding the payment of a lump sum.  Stock photos at Getty Images are high quality images, and they come at a high price.  However, with the rise of amateur photographers such as those in Los Angeles, the prices of stock photos have dropped dramatically. Dreamstime.com , a company that specializes in low priced, high quality photos, has enjoyed a rise of interest from stock photo seekers.

Norman Rockwell has created high quality and influential paintings and illustrations.  He is to be well remembered.  We also hope that his works continue to have a profound influence in American history.
