Recession in GDP? Not So For Companies That Serve Chinese Tourists

The Commerce Department confirmed that the economy recovered slower than originally thought, according to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report for 2009.  However, for companies that serve Chinese tourists, there is hardly any sign of recession.

Los Angeles. According to the Commerce Department, the first estimate for third-quarter GDP growth had the economy expanding at a 3.5% annual pace. Last month that was revised to 2.8%. On Tuesday, the Commerce Department cut its estimate further to 2.2%.  Normally, quarterly GDP figures are revised three times, but the revisions are seldom quite this discouraging.

It is discouraging for most people, that is, but not for businesses that cater to Chinese tourists.

According to Chinese tour guides at Chinese Travel Agency (VIP), two Chinese travelers just spent more than $120,000 for three luxury watches in Beverly Hills, California.  "They are not the super rich in China.  They are just average business owners there." says James Wang, the guide.

Wonder why the real estate prices in some of the cities in California have risen more than 15%?  Blame the Chinese.  The local ones purchase residential houses in good school districts for the education of their children.  The Chinese from China purchase the houses in good school districts hoping that their children to be educated in the United States.

"The real estate market in Chinese communities in Los Angeles has been affected at all", says Michael Shang, a real estate agent.

Many Chinese business people and government officials come to the US to exchange ideas and to have business trips.  It is rumored that a US-China business convention will be held in August of next year, in Los Angeles, bringing in a dozen governors from different provinces of China as well as hundreds of business leaders.  There will be about three thousand people coming from China, and another three thousand from the US.  Invitation letters are also sent to President Obama.

"If that happens, there will be insufficient Chinese speaking tour guides in Los Angeles.  I am sure local businesses in Los Angeles will want to stock up luxury items and have sufficient inventories for the Chinese visitors." Says a Chinese tour guide in Los Angeles.

However, Chinese tourists behave somewhat differently from the Europeans ones.  "Most of them rely on the recommendation of local Chinese speaking travel guides.  They also want to purchase brand name products." Says Jeff Zhang, another Chinese travel guide in Los Angeles.

How to capitalize the Chinese tourists' purchasing power? Get in touch with Chinese travel agencies in Los Angeles.  Most Chinese tour guides earn minimum wage, and they work hard and rely on tips and commissions from stores to make a living.  Need an Chinese translator? If two average Chinese business owners can spend $12,000 on three watches, what will 3000 Chinese do?
