Los Angeles Metro Website Unfriendly to Handheld Device or Mobile (Cell) Phone Users

The new design of Los Angeles Metro Website www.mta.net looks nice to desktop computer users.  However, handheld device or cell phone (mobile phone) users are unable to plan their trips on the go.

Los Angeles.  A few weeks ago, the website of Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority had a new design.  It added more features and looked nicer than the old design.  However, to many of the handheld device or mobile phone users, it has become their nightmare.

"I tried to use my blackberry to access the Los Angeles Metro's website and plan my trips.  However, it doesn't work anymore, at least not on my blackberry".  Says Jerry Wang, a student who mostly uses public transportation system to commute.

"The new design looks nice on my desktop computer, but I cannot use their trip planner on my cell phone".  Says Jenny Johnston, a former USC student.

We have tried to access Los Angeles Metro's website as well, and we found that it did not direct us to the cell phone friendly page as it used to do.

What happened?  Why is there such a change?  While we did not receive any response from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the website, accessed through regular computers, showed more information and features than the past.

"I think they should show concern to us iPhone and blackberry users as more and more people are using their cell phones to access the Internet and to get information about bus schedules.  Next year, the Google phone called Nexus One will come out as well.  It is an opportunity for the Los Angeles MTA to promote themselves among the mobile internet users and to encourage them to use public transportation system."  Says Peter Wei, an environmentalist.  "It helps to reduce the pollution and saves their gasoline bills as well."

"Without a handheld device user friendly website, you just cannot do it."  Concludes Wei.
